I carry my own security! We have stayed in many rest areas, Wal Marts and the like in the past 40 years and have never had any problems but if I ever felt threatened, I would just start the engine and drive off! One of the advantages of a motor home.

I must have missed it.......what is wrong with resting at a rest stop!?

Some seem to think that they will get beat up, raped, mugged, pistol whipped, propositioned and have their kids sold into slavery if they rest at a rest stop.

Crime DOES happen at rest stops. Last summer, two people were kidnapped and killed at a rest area in New Mexico that we used to stop at when we were in the area. It happened in the middle of the day and the couple had stopped to let the dogs out for a run. There were three Arizona prison escapees who were hiding at the rest area. They grabbed the lady who was walking the dogs and used her to get her husband to cooperate. They were taken to a secluded area near Santa Rosa and killed and their trailer was burned. Two of the three dogs were found in the area.

DH and I no longer stop at rest areas to walk our dogs. The crime at the rest area in New Mexico occurred two weeks after we had stopped there. It is near the interstate, so someone could have seen what was happening, but it isn't a busy rest area. I think you run into trouble at rest areas where criminals know that there isn't a lot of traffic and no one will see their crimes. We now stop at truck stops for brief stops and overnight in campgrounds. Everyone has to determine how comfortable they are regarding stopping in rest areas, but you shouldn't just dismiss crime in rest areas as people being paranoid.

LOL, you must have missed my first logical editorial. You may want to rethink your statement.

Yes, crime does happen at rest stops. It also happens at campgrounds, 711's and even in churches. Why didn't you mention those?

If your worried about getting hurt or killed your in the wrong hobbie. Your chances of getting killed in a traffic accident are by the 1000th power greater that getting hurt or killed at a rest stop. After all, our hobbie has us on the road......A LOT.

There is around 100 deaths A DAY in the US from traffic accidents. A DAY!!!!! And your so worried about rest stop you say you no longer walk your dog at one? How many deaths happened at rest stops a day in the US?

Following your logic you would be far more worried about getting hit by a asteroid than getting heart disease. (The latter of which is the #1 killer in the US)(The former, I don't know)

I will look forward to how you reconcil these statistics.

I don't have to reconcile your statistics. I never said that campgrounds are not dangerous or even driving on the highway isn't dangerous. The OP was about rest areas, not 7-11's or churches or driving on the highway. I was trying to stay on point by discussing crime at rest areas. You inferred that people were being paranoid by thinking that they will be "beat up, raped, mugged, pistol whipped, propositioned and have their kids sold into slavery if they rest at a rest stop.". I simply made the point that crime does occur at rest stops and it shouldn't be dismissed--after all that is what this thread was discussing.

BTW Scooterseats, both of the people who were killed at the rest area in New Mexico had concealed carry permits and had firearms in their TV. It is a very sad situation as these people were from OKC and just setting out to meet some friends for a vacation.

BTW, this is Mrs. TTStansfield and my opinions do not necessarily reflect my DH's views. He is away at sea and will be the only one posting in the future.

What a tragic story. At first I couldn’t see any point to the escapees’ action, but then it occurred to me that they must have wanted the RVers’ tow vehicle. Why on earth couldn’t they have just stolen it and left those poor people in peace.

Four reasons: One, it gets them street cred if/when they are caught. A convicted killer is given a lot more respect than a carjacker, and this difference (especially for a lifer) can mean doing time in peace versus having to deal with getting jumped every day. Two, it also gives them credibility with their gang (in some prisons, an inmate either joins a gang for protection, or is prey to all.) Three, no witnesses. Fourth, killing someone of a rival race is a major coup in that crowd.

So you dismiss the fact that our hobbie is inherently dangerous because we are on the road a lot and roads are dangerous, (proven by statistics) but your worried that harm can come to you in a rest stop even though this statistic is so small nobody even tracks it?

Wow; just wow.

LOL, I really don't know what to say to that other than wow.

Oh, and yes, people are being paranoid when something happens so infrequently that are are no statistics even kept about it and then turn around and do something that is a buzillion times more likely to kill them. Weird.

Now that this thread has devolved, it's time to put it to rest.
