Does anyone use Freeze dried food while camping to cut down on the amount of work and gear you have to carry? We are are also into disaster prepparedness and usually have some on had. I know that eating this type of food is not the healthiest thing due to the sodium content, calories and such.

When we used to tent camp, we would still try and avoid the dehydrated stuff! ;B
We would use it if we backpacked, due to the weight, but most of the time, we would 'trailer' camp, towing a utility trailer with all the scout stuff in back, so we camped fairly close to the cars....with only a short hike to the campsites.

It was easy enough to have two boys carry a cooler with fresh meats and stuff.

As for the Emergency Prep. aspect....yeah, it makes sense, but at home, I can still open a can of beans and cook it on the grill (or use the RV), since weight isn't an issue!

I'm sure that plenty of folks on here, HAD to eat them in the Service, so don't want to see them again

Worth a try? Sure, but I think you'll eventually decide that there are only a few specific times that you will want to use them.

Even when I tent camped I tried to enjoy life. Eating c(r)ap to keep you alive doesn't fit in that plan. Make the effort to eat fresh food if possible and enjoy life.

I only use it when backpacking or kayak camping. Mountain House is the brand I like best. And you can 'cook' the meals right in the bag by adding boiling water. Tasty? Not very but at least you get your meat and veggies (or vegetarian meals if you prefer). Since I don't do it very often, it's no big deal and when I'm backpacking I'm usually too tired to eat much, anyway. If I were car camping I would definitely use real food.

Pretty hard to beat when backpacking but wouldn't be my preference for regular camping or RVing.

When we tent camped we ALWAYS carried some dried food, even when near car. Several times we were too tired to go shopping, and a few times we were effectively snowed in (that was interesting in a tent, but ok as long as we didn't let too much build up on tent). Stuff happens, carry emergency food, or if you do camp a lot you WILL go hungry some night(s).

Been there, done that.

Sort of like eating those poly peanuts that they use for packing stuff to ship it.

I have tried the freeze dried, and even when backpacking it was not that great. However I dehydrate my food the taste is the same, the food is the same when re-hydrated and the weight is about 1/3 (depending on the product that I dehydrate)I also vacuum seal.

No! Surely you can pack something light weight but tastey. Or easy prep but tastey.
