I drive X miles a year. My car gets 25 mpg in the mixed driving I do, the truck would get about 15. I change the oil twice as often but use half as much. Truck is 6 LT tires vs 4 el cheapo P metrics. It just costs less per mile to drive the car, The truck will last a long time at 15K a year, and I can buy lots of 3K cars for the price of a new truck.

My 04 tow vehicle only has 34K on it and plan on keeping it until I retire. Others would just as soon have a new tow vehicle every couple of years. My maintenance cost for my 97 blazer are a fraction of what the Diesel truck runs. Tires Diesel $880. Blazer $392. Oil Change Diesel $79 Blazer $20. I guess it's what works for you.

Well, I'm also one of those who truck only sees towing duty and the occasional hauling task like black dirt, fertilizer, moving my daughter, etc...

My truck is a 2000 model and has 50K miles on it, nearly all of that towing my trailers... It sits in the garage nearly all winter and has only seen snow once in it's lifetime so far...

End result - a nearly pristine truck (and I mean PRISTINE) with 50K miles that is now 12 years old - - and I fully expect to get at least another 10 years out of it...

With the price of trucks in the $50-$60K category for a new one, they are out of my price range on my retirement fixed income... My daily driver (when I do drive) is a 2002 PT Cruiser bought about 6 years ago for $7900...

As far as I'm concerned it was money well spent and has saved me a ton of money not having to buy a new truck... Just MHO

Given the price of diesel fuel I am thinking of parking my 08 cummins and buying a small pick up (S10/ranger) for everyday driving. My question is would it be a bad idea to keep the diesel parked and only used when towing or should I keep driving it? Please give me pros and cons of parking the big rig until ready to tow. Thanks
I would suggest a smaller car instead of a smaller PU . That is unless you have your heart set on a small PU . The idea here is to get the most bang for your buck in the mileage dept. . You can always use your truck now and then if needed which would also be good for it. Life is Good.

gUESS i MESSED UP!!!!
Sold my 2007 SUV 6 months ago with 24000 on it (let a friend use it to go to Cal. for his daughter's wedding and the Grand Canyon) or it would have only have 20,00 on it. BUT had a 1996 chry. sebring (now has 177,00) on it and let my F350 sit except when towing or just want to drive it.. My 2006 Chevy Express has just turned 100,00 tonight. Guess I need to drive the F350 more it has 20000 on it and 16,000 from towing a 3625re Big Sky. wow how bad am I????

I suppose I'm one of the young and stubborn guys. I figure if I'm going to pay what I did for my truck I'm going to drive it. My daily commute is 32 miles one way, I average 13.5mpg and I'm comfortable doing it. I have weighed the options of purchasing a cheap commuter car, but 3-5k buys me a lot of gas and in the end I'm driving a vehicle I enjoy.

If I did have the park the truck (if it was a Diesel) I would want to get it out once a week on a nice long drive personally. I just have heard stories about diesel's sitting and seals going.

To all.........

My wife and I immgrated to Canada from London England in 05 for the big wide spaces and the big wide trucks and to get away from the Land of the Hatchbacks!

So for us we love to drive around in our LTZ Silverado truck all year round, looking down on the minions in their feeble sedans!

One reason we can afford gas is because we do not smoke, drink or have kids college fees to worry about! LOL.

+10000 on get a commuting vehicle.. But get something that is relatively cheap, and has good resale... Toyota/Honda/Subaru or VW tdi. Personally, today's hybrid's are a FAD, and are just as harmful to the environment as regular cars (but I won't get into that).

My truck only gets driven 4 months of the year (sad but that's our camping season), and I drive a 98 impreza to/from work. Wife still has her suv for road trips and such.
