Even though we are loving our "new to us" 2004 Coleman Carmel, the tent trailer mattress is killing my hips. It feels like I'm essentially sleeping right on top of the plywood pullout, and that's even with an egg crate type mattress topper. Does anyone have a recommendation of a mattress topper that would give these old bones some extra padding? (okay, I'm a whiner, actually born in 1960, not 1920 like I'm acting). I checked the Costco site and the gel topper I am interested in measures several inches too wide for the bed. What to do?

How thick of a matress is it, and is there room for a thicker one not really impressed with those memoryfoam toppers and think another couple inches of the stiffer foam would help more

Here is a good one or you can just get a cheaper air mattress (expect to replace the air mattress every year).

We bought a 10 inch thick overstock RV one for less a few years ago, it looks like the prices have gone up...

Do you have any problems getting the top of the trailer to close completely shut when you are taking down the trailer? The mattresses at overstock are substantially thicker than what I presently have in my pup.

Do the "tissue box" test. Put a box of Kleenex on your current mattress and fold the camper down. If it gets crumpled, there probably isn't room. No crunch? You are probably okay.

We have this mattress in out TT. When we had the populous, we used 3" memory foam on top of air mattresses and slept like babies!

Thats why I asked how much room you got I dont fold down my DP
Id try for as thick as you can get and if you look around some custom foam matress places will build one out of three or four densities of foam for ya. And any where from four to ten inches overall thickness.
Worst thing go to a fabric shop and get a roll of two inch thick foam and sandwich that in after you unfold the trailer.

Let's see what my slightly senile mind can come up with.

Since there was only two of us and we both slept on the same end we'd just take the other end mattress and flop it on top of "our end". Helped a lot.

As for egg crate and foam toppers don't forget you don't have to match exactly what's there. Just by bigger. An electric knife works well to cut them down to size.

As for space over the existing mattress PopUp's are all different. We've had ones that a swear a sheet on the mattress kept the roof from closing and another model from the same manufacturer have 6-7 inches of clearance. The tissue box test is a good check. But even if it crunches a bit don't forget unless it's completely flat it'll still show you how much room you have. Don't forget to tuck in the canvas as it takes up space as well.

TempFlo will make one any size. Great mattresses, but not cheap.
