The last two years we travelled south from Harrisburg on route 15 which becomes 17 and joins I95 at Fredricksburg. It is a decent highway but slow especially near the south end. Wondering about I81 to I64 This may be longer in miles but maybe shorter in time. Also are there many long climbs? Any information would be appreciated.

Most of the easterners we know use I81 to I 66 to route 17 and then I 95. Can take the route 295 around Richmond depending on the time of day you are passing through.
Where are you staying at MB? One of our favorite places to visit.

We travel to Central NY every year or so, and have tried most routes. I recommend I81 to I66 to US17 to I95 and take I295 around Richmond. You may hit some heavy traffic on I95 for 10 miles until you get south of Fredricksburg, if it is afternoon and DC rush hour is still on, but its not bad. The hassle of US15 from Harrisburg to US17 is worse. We have also gone I81 to I64 -- this takes about an hour longer.
Your longest hills are probably around Scranton on I81. Taking I64 you do have Afton Mountain west of Charlottesville. Following I66 you probably won't notice the hills.

Agree with the I81 to I 66 to route 17 and then I 95 (295 around Richmond depending on the time of day). Rte 17 can be a pain at times but usually is good, Fredericksburg is always congested. I81 to 64 to 95 is all interstate. It does have the mountain climb. Even though it is interstate all the way it does add about an hour on to the trip.

We've done this trip 3 years in a row now and I find the easiest thing to do is take the 15 south rte but leave around midnight. This way you cruise through the beltways with almost no traffic. Once we're clear of Richmond we pull over and take a good nap then proceed the rest of the way down.

I do not want to hijack this post, but I am in a similiar situation.
In July I am going to Myrtle Beach. I was planning on taking I-81 to I-66 then down 17 to I-95 and sleeping in Fredericksburg.
My neighbor tells me 17 is a parking lot, is that true? I would be travelling on a Saturday to arrive at the MBTP on Sunday afternoon.
My other option is 81 to 64 to 295 to 95.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.

We did that trip in Jul 2011 with no problems at all. we had a caravan of 8 units and were able to stay together. We love that section of 17 as the scenery is the best and a lot of it is divided highway now. We had no real waits at the jnuction with I 95. Would highly recommend this set of directions.

I am going that way in mid-April. I usually take US 17 to I-95 but instead this time I am going to stay on Rt. 15 to Culpepper, then take Rt. 522 south to I-64, 64 east to Rt. 288 south and 288 to I-95 south of Richmond. I don't know what Rt 522 will be like but I am not in a big hurry and I want to avoid the traffic on I-95 between Fredricksburg and Richmond.
