Good morning

I recently seen a post about water dripping from the water heater high pressure value and how to fix it. I noticed mine is dripping and I can't find the fix it post. I think it had something to do with air in the tank. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Is this dripping just after you've fired up the heater? If so, don't worry about it. If it bugs you just open a faucet anywhere in the system for a second to relieve the pressure created by the expanding water in the HWH.

If it's leaking full time, you can flip it on and off a couple of times to rinse it of any obstructions, but if it continues beyond that replacement is necessary.

If you have air in your tank it is probably from a faulty pressure relief valve. The pressure relief valve is just like the one on a household water heater. Very easy to replace. Turn off the water heater, turn off the pump/city water valve, open the pressure relief valve, unscrew with a wrench, go to hardware store and find replacement(make sure it is the same rating/pressure), get some pipe thread tape/teflon tape, apply pipethread/teflon tape, screw valve back in and tighten with wrench...done.

Get a new pressure relief valve.

The first thing to try....shut off the heater....run the water till it runs cold....shut off water and open hot faucet to relieve pressure....remove drain plug and let about a gallon or more out....install plug...turn on water...turn on heater and see what happens. There is a small pocket of air space that acts like an expansion tank in these. After time it gets absorbed by the water and will cause the relief valve to leak. I need to do this twice a year and always works....except when the valve was bad....once in 25 years. If the valve is bad follow the same routine except before turning water on install the new valve....cost about 12 bucks in HD or Lowes

Just flip you pressure relief valve open shut a couple of times. You are what is commonly called "water logged". The air pocket at the top of your tank has gone. Flipping the valve to drain some water will normally fix this problem. At the same time this will clean any sediment away from you pressure relief valve seat.

Spadocter and homer are on the right track. What you want to do is inject air into the water heater. There are a number of ways to do it. The easy way (for me) is to hook a hose up to a spigot..... then hook the hose up to the RV.....then open a hot water line in the RV...... then turn the spigot on. The air in the hose will be forced into the water heater by the water coming from the spigot.

The following is info from the Atwood service manual on how to properly establish the air pocket.

Step 1: Turn off water heater
Step 2: Turn off incoming water supply
Step 3: Open the closest hot water faucet in the coach
Step 4: Pull handle of pressure-temperature relief valve straight out and allow water to flow until it stops.
Step 5: Allow pressure-temperature relief valve to snap shut, turn on water supply and close faucet.

Finally......the easiest & correct way

link to thread

The water heater is designed to have a air pocket in the water heater… that’s why the outlet is not at the very top of the tank…

The air will compress and allows for the expansion of the heated water…
