If it ran long enough it might take the place of camp fire in a can.

Sounds like an excellent companion for the Bassomatic 5000.

Nothing wrong with it a major overhaul won't cure.. But it may just need a carb clean and adjust.

I worked for a while in a small engine shop, The two most common issues with these small engines are dirty carbs, due to letting them sit with fuel in them for too long, and bad points, (Many modern engines do not have the old style points so this may or may not be an issue)

but a lot of times I cleaned & adjusted the carb, replaced the points, re-set the timing and it ran just fine.

Though a "Belchfire 8000" I never worked on.

And once it's fixed, as with any generator 1/2 hour under 1/2 load every month (Exercise) use clean fuel and stabilize it (Sta-Bil or Sea Foam)

Me personally, there are far to many generators out there, and not plaqued by problems. Safe travels.

Does the generator get hot enough to bake potatoes? Imagine what a hit you would be at the campgrounds when you let the kids make Smores on the cherry red exhaust pipe. My only concern would be how long you can run the generator until the muffler turns into a liquid.

mlts22 writes "the muffler glowed red-hot, and fire came from the exhaust."

NTMID8R3 writes "sounds like it is running very lean !! "

Wolfe10 writes "Or an exhaust valve is sticking open or burned allowing combustion flame out the exhaust."

Not enough info from mlts22.

First was this test run during the day in broad daylight or was it in the evening (dark)?

If in the daylight then perhaps there is a problem.

If in the evening (dark) then it may be possible that there is nothing wrong.

Why? Simply due to the fact that the darkness will reveal the flame from the exhaust valve opening and the heat coming from the exhaust can easily turn the exhaust pipe a nice bright red. Basically glowing.

These gens operate at 3600 RPM and can shoot some flame that can be seen when dark.

I would however think you will find that that gen is going to be a bit big and heavy to lug around and unless you have a RV with a 50A shore cord you will only be able to get 3000 watts from it. Since it will have at least a 13 HP engine it will be very thirsty to boot.

Something this size is better suited for use as a HOME standby gen provided you need the full 6Kw.

I do believe that's what the OP actually said in his first post, at the end.

I would take it for free- there has to be a bit of copper in it, and scrap prices are pretty high right now.

My guess is that the muffler is packed with carbon. Take the gennie home, if it is free, and remove the muffler. I bet it will run like a champ. Then you just have to decide if you did the honest thing.
