About three weeks ago I filled up my propane tank in case we needed it for power outages etc. Today when I checked it, the tank was down to about 1/4 full. The outlet valve was in the open position, but I had not been using the propane at all since I filled it. I know now I should have closed the valve, but my question is, should I have lost that much propane due to leakage? I have not yet checked any of the fittings, but just wondering about the possible leakage thru this valve. Any info appreciated.

That sounds like a major leak to me. I would be surprised that you didn't smell the propane in and around your RV and that it didn't set off the propane alarm.

There is definitely a leak somewhere!!

Check all the valves and fittings with a soap and water solution and see if you get any bubbles.

To lose that much would be quite a leak

You should not lose any propane due to leakage.

I've had a 2nd-stage LP regulator diaphragm rupture overnight on a pretty new RV. I found it by smell the next morning. Luckily it was windy overnight, so it never built up a rich enough mixture to go 'bang.' But that would have totally emptied the tank if I hadn't found it.

If it's plugged in, are you sure that your furnace thermostat isn't on? I thought I turned my furnace off once, but actually just pushed the lever to the low setting. Left it plugged in in chilly weather, and didn't go out until several days later.... needless to say, it'd burned enough LP to notice.

I leave the tank valve open all the time. Except when it is being filled. You have a leak someplace. Was the stove top burner left on?

Since you haven't smelled anything, maybe the gauge is not working properly??

You have a leak and 2 solutions you could pursue.

Fix the leak. This will be the most expensive solution. If you do it yourself you'll probably have to buy a propane leak detector & probe. It could be ANYWHERE including the fridge, furnace, and pipes in between. You can also pay somebody big money to find & fix.

OR

The simple easy solution. Turn off the valve when not in use. Even if you had to run the fridge for a couple days, it won't be that bad of a drain.

I would opt for the simple solution.

4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

If there is a leak, option simple solution could be dangerous.

if it didnt leak before you refilled it, you may just have not tightened your regulator enough.
