As you know Canada has high fuel prices and in BC there is also a carbon tax on top of that, here is an added cost. Anyhow there is a new Port Mann Bridge being built on hwy 1 east of Vancouver BC. Everyone using the bridge is expected to pay a toll. Cameras are used in this regard, no toll booth. Now here is the clincher. They want you Americans to pay up also,

"In the event that we have visitors from the U.S., who have crossed a number of times, have an outstanding toll and haven't paid yet, then we're able to work with a company in the United States that would provide us with the contact information for those drivers," said Max Logan, of the Transportation Investment Corp.

Have a nice visit to BC.

It will be a toll bridge, everyone using the bridge will be expected to pay.

There will be a kiosk before and after the bridge to allow those that dont want to register a credit card the ability to pay on the spot.

For more info take a look at this newspaper clipping.Tolls on Port Mann Bridge

Ontario has the ETR407 toll road around Toronto that operates with no toll booths also. They send you a bill later, even in the USA. There is no idea of what the toll is until you get the bill but do not try to take a MH on the road. They can stop you as often as they want and give a fine for not having a transponder. When I got my bill they only accepted Visa and Master Card. I only had Discover and AMEX. When I called they would not accept a check. After sitting on hold for many minutes the girl came back and said just forget about it. I can do better just going through on 401 in the middle of the day.

We spent time in British Columbia during our trip to Alaska last summer. Many locals we spoke to said "B.C." meant "Bring Cash".

FORGET IT
! We got the bill and it was $68 US for the MH and $42 for the truck until they released that I was towing the truck then the lowered the bill to $110 US. Yep, same price for one as for two. When I refused to pay they contacted South Dakota and SD told me I owe $110 for the ticket and $25 fine for getting SD involved. This was in 2005.

The funny part is it is easier for the toll people to get out of country drivers info than is to get it from another province. I, nor others I have spoken to, have ever gotten a bill while driving the 407 with Alberta plates.

The subject of this thread is NOT toll roads anywhere but in BC! You want to talk about other jurisdictions (political discussions are no-no!) start a new thread!

BC has always had a way to collect down south. While I never got a tickeet, several co-workers did, and found out.... (work took us up-island, a lot)

When tolling first started on the Tacoma Narrows bridge we found out that Washington HAD no method of collecting from Canadians that just drove around the toll-booth.... They do now

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

Ouch! I was actually finding some of the comments quite interesting. I've never considered/thought about/worried about travelling through Toll areas before. I think the original post got some people thinking and wanting to share their experiences. Thanks Seamutt!!

How many comments can be made about one toll bridge in BC????
