Hello, all.

I have lucked out and got a job back in Dallas where my family is. Time to tow the fifth wheel home. I need to get it from Manvel (Houston) to Wylie (Dallas). Problem is I bought it down here and had it moved a couple of times locally but never towed it myself. My truck will pull it okay but I have no hitch. I am looking for a used Gooseneck adapter as I figure that will be the cheapest and easiest route to go. Anyone in this area have one they are looking to sell? I would love to have a true 5th wheel hitch but will use it so randomly that I figure the gooseneck will be easier to install in the bed of the truck.

Or is anyone with a 5th wheel hitch planning a drive from Houston to Dallas just out of sheer boredom next week?

Thanks,
Maury

Can't help you out but if you don't get an offer to tow it for you, you may find a gooseneck set-up will be no cheaper than a regular fifth wheel hitch. You still have a ball that has to be installed in the truck and then you have to buy and have installed the gooseneck adapter to attach to the fiver.

And then you have the added question......."just how much stress can my 5th wheel pin box structure take with the gooseneck adapter being used?"

You might be best off contacting a couple of local RV dealers in your area and Dallas, and see what they do to transport fifth wheels. Normally they will have a list of drivers that can tow the trailer for you. Then you will only be out fuel cost and a little more for the driver's time and effort.

You can also scan Craigslist.com for a fifth wheel hitch, you should be able to find a used one someplace!

You didn't say much about the size or age of your fiver, or if you already had a gooseneck hitch installed in your truck. If you already have the hitch, I would attempt to locate an inexpensive G/N adapter, given the infrequent towing you do. I towed my old Cougar with a G/N adapter for years and had no problems. Some folks will warn you off this idea, however given your situation I would think it would be the smart move.

The ball in the bed may look pretty simple but what you don't see is the beefy mount for it that attaches to the frame underneath. Installation wise I don't think you will find a huge difference in difficulty.

If it were me and I were dead-set on towing it myself, I would get the B&W turnover ball, and the B&W Companion hitch.

Best of both worlds!

I really have my doubts about putting a gooseneck adapter on a 22-year-old trailer. Even if it were rated for such stress when new, it's 22 years old now, the equivalent of 91 in human years.

Alternatively you could advertise it on uship and maybe one of the haulers from "SHIPPING WARS" will bid on it. Then you get your trailer hauled and you get to be on TV too!
