Our four year old Garmin costs about $250 at Sam's Club. It cannot seem to acquire a satellite. It still thinks we are in Monroe Michigan, 1200 miles away. The screen and buttons work but the only thing it seems to know how to do is tell time.
Are these things fixable or should I just junk it?

Depends on the model, some of them can be repaired (software upgrade, etc.). I would contact Garmin because it may be a known issue.

dspencer - I hate to display my stupidity to the world, but how did you upgrade the software. Did you send in the unit, or is there something that can be downloaded?

Connect it to a high speed Internet computer and download any and all updates. But without the proper patch cord you will be dead. Do you have it?

I will have to pick one up.
It seems to look like a miniature USB port.
So a regular USB plug on one end for the computer, and a smaller/thinner one on the other end for the Garmin.

the cable comes with the GPS, when you buy it. did you buy it second-hand?
the instruction manual shows how to update the software.
the manual can be downloaded on Garmin's website.
