DW and I are thinking of traveling from RI to DC on April Vacation with 4 kids (ages 16, 13, 9, 7) and looking for ideas on where to stay and what to do. I will have to look but someone once told me of a campground in VA thats close to train and easy in and out of DC as well as other local attractions. All suggestions are welcome...Thanks

Did the same trip a couple of years back - DC for work so brought the family for 2 weeks and did work/vacation...
we stayed at Cherry Hill Campground in College Park, MD. The campground is very nice and has transportation available in/out of the City.
Cherry Hill Campground
Price wise - thought it to be a little high at the time, but it was close to where I needed to work and close to transportation in/out of DC. Good ammenities and good size sites.

Cherry Hill x3. The bus stops at the campground, takes you to the train, once in DC take the on-off trolly. voila! Ask the campground office for tourist info. You have to have a ticket to get into the Washington Monument or the White House, and there are long waits so plan ahead if you want to visit those.
In addition to all the regular monuments and Smithsonian (you could spend a week there alone)...
Don't miss the National Air and Space Museum at the Dulles Airport. An extension of the Smithsonian. Awesome!
Friday night east of the Capital 8th and "I" Streets at the Marine Corps Barracks, the Marine Corps Band and Drill team's Sunset Parade.
National Museum of the American Indian.
Department of the Treasury to see money being made.
Changing of the Guard at Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington Cemetery.

We were fortunate enough to attend the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. last spring. It was beautiful and well worth the trip. Check out their web site. Have a great trip.

Check out Pohick Bay regional park in Lorton,Va if you don't need the pricey amenities of cherry hill. We used Pohick as our base for a week in April 2011. We had our own transportation to the metro station and for us traffic was a non issue even though you'll read about how bad it is. couldn't have been any better for us.. Would definitely go back.. Also convenient to Mt Vernon which was very nice.

Thanks for all the feedback. Is a 5 day trip enough?

We did spring break 2012 in DC w/ our 4 kids (ages 9, 7, 7, 5 at time). We stayed at Bull Run Regional Park and drove in and parked at Ronald Reagan building's garage. We didn't want to pay the daily rail for 6 of us, even w/ passes. We were not there during Cherry Blossom festival, though, if so we might not have been able to count on empty parking at the Ronald Reagan garage.
We did drive by Pohick Bay and thought if we did it again we might stay there instead, it seemed to have a good location.
We also saw Prince William Forest by the Marine Museum and thought that would be another option.
There's a lot of stuff on the periphery to go see. Plenty right in Washington. You could easily have enough to see for longer than 5 days..but your 7 yr old might get tired from all the daily walking day after day.

For what it's worth, several of my kids say that going to Washington DC was their favorite vacation ever. I wondered at their ages if they'd get enough out of it but they loved the memorials & museums.
