Being an old fart with time and also knowing that most businesses in 2013 are trying to somehow deceive there customers, I check most everything.
I had to go by Walmart so I grabbed 2 -20LB. propane tanks that needed filling and exchanged them with the Blue Rhino setup they have. $18+ per tank.
This morning I had to go the other direction past the Propane store so I stopped and had a another 20LB. tank filled for $15.
When I got home I weighed all the tanks. The tank filled at the propane store had 20LB. but the 2 Blue Rhino tanks had 14-15LB. each.
Then I see a plastic label around the tank and in small print it says 15LB.
I don't know about anyone else but when I go to get a refill for a propane tank, I assume it is filled. Just one more deceptive business in Blue Rhino.
The sign on the exchange cage should read "3/4 full tank exchange".

Yup...... Most of those propane "exchange" deals are the same way. I don't believe its just Blue Rhino that does it.

Your story is not unusual...
Blue Rhino is well known for supplying "short" fills at full fill or higher prices.

When I get propane, I want to see exactly what is metered into my tanks.

First off the exchanges that you used are always that way, they short you a little bit of propane and as you say are more expensive. I always get mine refilled at a propane store. You say that a sign needs to be placed on the cage but you also say there was a plastic label that said 15 lbs so I guess they filled your request for a sign now didn't they. All I can say is lesson learned from 1 old fart to another.

Thanks for posting that! I guess I'm a really old fart, since I didn't even notice it! Thankfully, I usually have the tank on the RV done at the local RV Service shop (I trust them) and only have the 20# tanks for the grill....so don't have to refill very often.

I'll be sure to take the time and go to the LP store next time.
Actually, I guess Blue Rhino is figuring that most of the people who use them, are just trying to get rid of an old (expired) bottle that they can't get refilled at Costco or a place that someone checks the bottle before refilling. They are taking that into account! Still, why not fill the bottle?? Do they worry about expansion, with the rack sitting out in the Sun?

Thanks again!

So how can it be a scam if they have a tag attached saying how much is in the propane tank?

I know when I fill my MH up on the road they will NOT fill it to full only up to 3/4. They say its some sort of new law or whatever.

Maybe the same thing with the propane bottles?

That's probably why they had to add that little label that said 15lbs on the 20 pound bottle since they are not allowed to fill it up anymore.

You buy new tanks and trade them in on used tanks?

Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

Still a good deal IF your old tank is nearing expiration date and you want a newer tank!
