Unfortunately, the kids were not thinking. They've not lived long enough to understand the impact. Likely hadn't been brought out to the parks with their parents at an age where they could grow and learn to appreciate the land.

To a smaller extent, but equally as disheartening, didn't take long for "kids" to use charred pieces of trees burned at Bastrop State Park, to write on the new logs and cross-beams used to rebuild a CCC shelter on a scenic overlook in the park. I was out there with a group of volunteers clearing trails of limbs and trees that continue to fall from the 2011 Labor Day fire. We worked our way up to see the recently completed overlooks to find the mess. Very disappointing.

Since this is a Federal NP, the penalties should be much stiffer than $5,000 and 6 months I'm thinking. And the protected status of the Native American Site will carry even a bigger fine state prison time I'd imagine.

Social Media is so out of control, that coupled with todays youth is sad, just really sad.

It's too bad that probably none of these kids were ever taken camping or hiking in their youth. It's why taking kids camping is SO important!

6 months minimum after you clean to the satisfaction of the professionals. 5000 is just a drop in the bucket for these punks. Give them a story to tell their buds for not doing it.

You are so right. We had a couple old covered bridges near where we live and a few years ago some kids burned our favorite one down. Built in 1868 and was on the National Register of Historic Places... It is no more and our kids just couldn't understand how anyone could do that to something irreplaceable.

Sorry to hear about this.

NPS isn't doing their job if vandals are destroying the parks. What a shame.

What I don't understand is that when these vandals are actually sometimes caught; why arent' the sentenced to the task of removing their graffiti? And/or paying for the removal? If that sentence was implemented, it would certainly cut down on the instances of it.
Even the present sentences, which seem to be adequate, are never imposed on the scum that participate in this activity.

Taking the kids camping doesn't always help either. It's campers kids that vandalize the campgrounds and write all over and destroy things in the bathrooms etc. While camping the parents let them run and they do these things. Taking them camping isn't the solution. Teaching them from a young age to respect other people and property is what is needed along with discipline from parents. There doesn't seem to be much teaching or discipline from the current generation of parents. They want to be "friends" with their kids.

FYI, the Park is not closed - some sites and hiking trails within the park are closed.

I'm pretty sure NPS does not have the employees nor the funds to cover 100% of the trails and off road areas 24 hours a day at every national park; to blame NPS for the acts of a few miscreants and to state they are not "doing their job" is rather ludicrous.

As the acts of vandalism are being posted on Facebook and the like, it wont be long before quite a few are caught.
