I read quite often in this forum of people securing anything that weighs less than their RV to deter theft. It is a shame if this needs to be done and I am wondering if theft at campgrounds is as bad as some lead me to believe. I only have a couple of seasons under my belt and I have never been a victim -- I have always left (thief-desirable) things sitting outside, under my awning, sometime for the whole day, without even thinking that somebody at a campground would be so low to steal them. My friend, who has as much/little experience as I do, locks up everything or puts it inside, and I have always thought he is a bit paranoid, but after reading these forums, I'm thinking I have just been lucky.

I have always had the feeling that people at campgrounds are trustworthy and "part of the family" and would never violate another family member. How wrong am I?

Have been camping all my life and have never had a thing stolen. Everything is left outside, under awning etc. and never a problem. Never had anything stolen at sticks and bricks either.

A lot depends on the campgrounds you frequent, but in general if you continually provide opportunity, eventually someone will take advantage of said opportunity and help themselves to your stuff.

I don't think twice about leaving most items outside ie. chairs, lights, grill, we do tuck them close to the TT....BUT....I would never consider leaving my generator out!

I would say some areas are worse then others. In 17 years of camping I have never had a problem and I don't lock anything including the camper. If it does happen it will be my fault for not being pro-active.

I lock the Generator (If it is with me) and that's IT!!.. Well there was the one time in Myrtle Beach that I am assuming kids took my beer... That stays in the fridge that locks in the compartment now...

I have never lost anything I can remember as well but you sure should use some common sense I suspect.

Probably the only thing left standing for this setup would be the table if you left unattended outside.

Should I expect a difference between privately-owned and public campgrounds? I suppose I expect the answer to be yes -- public will be less secure than private, right?

My wife was raised in a suburb just outside of Chicago. She was raised with a high level of paranoia. Trust no one, trust nothing. Personal safety is one thing, property, I rather be smart, not waste energy worrying. We see things very differently at home and in the campgrounds.

That being said, in the 5 years we've been married, she is learning to relax. She is learning that the good people out there, outnumber the bad. It is okay to leave the basics set up outside. There are much better uses of energy, than living in fear that someone is waiting around the corner to rip you off.

We leave things sitting out when we leave the campground. Had two wine glasses sitting on the table disappear but that might have been racoons altho it was in a dry county so it may have been the rangers.
We always stay in public campgrounds. Like privacy and shade.
