Seems like there was a thread about the same general thing recently, but I can't find it so I'll start over.

Today at the dump station, a couple are on the other side of us, dumping their small TT. There is no potable water there. There is a hose on a vertical arm with a reel of hose at the top, so you can pull it out and into your RV if you want. And there is a regular hose spigot facing each lane. With a big sign saying DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER.

So anyway, he finishes dumping. After a minute, I notice he has a nice new looking white drinking water hose out. He proceeds to attach it to the spigot and the wife takes it into the TT to put it in the toilet (I am assuming). I was so stunned that I didn't keep enough wits about me to consider telling them what they were doing wrong. I normally would try to keep my advice to myself, but really, they needed someone to speak up.

I had stuff to do, and people were waiting. When I finished, she came out with the hose and said, "all the lights are still on", which I took to mean they were worrying about the tank level indicators. At that point, we left. I wish I would have said something. I might have gotten chewed out for it, but it would have rolled off my back pretty soon.

My DW says maybe they had a separate hose just for that. Um, I am betting not. Oh well.

I think I'd have at least asked "aren't you afraid you'll contaminate your drinking water hose" or something like that. Lots of newbes out there and they don't always think things through.

Isn't it really the HOSE that's the problem, and not the water itself?

The previous owner of our rig had two white hoses. One for potable water, the other for use while dumping. He had a strip of black electrical tape near the nozzle of the latter, I guess to differentiate. Too easy to make a mistake in my mind.

Its probably better that you did not say anything. If you spoke to them with the attitude you express here, calling them fools, you may not have liked the response. Sounds more like you had stuff to do and did not really care to help.

I agree.....Considering most of education I've acquired over the years, and fortunate enough to have survived, it seems the smarts learned by hard knocks, aka stupid mistakes, are remembered the longest. I don't know the symptoms of drinking bad water, I'd think it's pretty nasty, but with modern medicine available it's probably not fatal. I believe in the theory of, "if they don't ask, I don't tell".. One exception. If an unthinking pet owner is putting their pet at any kind of risk I will speak up. Their pets can't tell their unsuspecting owner's when they're acting stupid..... IMO...

I've got 3 or 4 white 'drinking water' hoses that have pin holes or some such other flaw that make them useless for city water connections.

That doesn't mean they're useless for ther tasks.
