I am 58 years old, work full time and even do some welding and construction on the weekends. The latter is where we get a lot of our RV and travel budget. Most of our trips are 1 week with a few that go 10 or 12 days. With both of our jobs it is hard to get away any longer than that. Even now when we travel we usually take at least a few minutes each day to answer business emails and even take/make a few phone calls.

We have saved all of our lives and look forward to retirement and longer trips. We have no desire to full time but 2 to 4 month trips are definitely in the plan.

Lately I have been thinking a lot about when to do this. The biggest problem I see is medical insurance. Both of us have some issues that require doctor visits every 2 to 4 months so unless something changes that is as long as we could be gone. I had a surgery 2 years ago that was over $100,000. Without insurance that would have been very hard on our retirement budget.

So, how old were you when you retired and what did you do about medical insurance?

50 the first time but due to failed economy I'm back working and now plan to go until 70.

Take a look at this site. There is a lot of great information regarding fulltime, medical insurance, budgets as well as other information. The gentleman that has put this together does a lot of research and has a legal/financial background and has been fulltiming for 8 years.

55 yrs, 1-day. took a 2.5% hit on the 5-yr early retirement but it was well worth it. was able to stay with my former employer's group but had to pay the full premium. I was able to do that because we walked into retirement not owing a dime to anyone. there have been some great moments in my life...my first bike, first car, marrying my high school sweetheart (44-yrs this march) but becoming 100% debt-free is ranked right up there with the rest.

Retired at 63 1/2 - that way I could use COBRA & keep my employers insurance until we both turn 65. Almost 16 years ago!

We were 60 and 58 when we retired in 2000. We had always maxed out 401k at work. Plus we didn't spend a lot on things we didn't need.
Insurance was cheaper in those days and we didn't and don't have medical issues. In those days I figured a 10 percent increase in premiums each year. We also made use of the medical savings plan that was available then.
I can tell you firstly 10 percent increases was to low, actual was closer to 15 percent increase.
I don't have a clue what ACA will do for you. 3 million people have signed up so it seems to do something for a lot of people without insurance.
If we had to do Doctor appointments every 2 to 4 month, I don't think we would be doing 5 and 6 month winter RVing. I do know people that just go to Doctors in the area they will be RVing for a few months based on recommendations from their usual Doctor.
Myself, a Doctor is a Doctor, but my wife likes her Doctor very much. Everything depends on something.
