I did back in 88. I bought a Jeep Comanche pickup truck only to find out that it was made in Canada. I bought my Japanese Toyota Camry and my Toyota Tundra that are made in the USA.

Those of you who continue to compare the Toyota Tundra to Ford, Chevy, and Dodge need to look at your vehicle's specifications carefully. The payload and towing capacity do not exceed the big 3 and the torque Toyota quotes becomes available at very high RPM's. If you look at Ford's 5.4L V-8 the torque is much higher and is available at lower RPM's. The Tundra is not ready for legitimate comparison with the big 3, it simply isn't in the same league. Motor Trend agrees with me and the majority of people in saying that the Tundra isn't a full-size truck.

It may not compete with the 5.4L of Ford, but it certainly does with the 5.3L of GM. GM has 325 lbs. of torque @ 4000 rpms. The Tundra is 315 @ 3400 rpms...which I don't think to very high as you stated. Also, the Tundra is a 4.7L. We don't even want to compare that to Fords 4.6L!!!!

The reason Ford is getting the torque they are at low r's is due to the SOHC design. Toyota's 4.7L is a DOHC which is allowing it to compete (IMO) pretty close to the big 3's larger V8's. Just imagine what the numbers will look like when they come out with the DOHC 5.4 next fall!! I would be willing to bet it will have some pretty impressive numbers....especially in the area of torque!!

You're assuming that the other truck manufacturers won't make any improvements to their vehicles next year either. All of the trucks made by the big 3 have greater towing capacities and longer wheelbases. I love how Toyota people compare the largest engine available in the Tundra to the smallest engines available in other pickups. If you are going to make a comparison, make an accurate comparison. Don't compare the largest Toyota engine with anything other than the largest engines in the Ford, GM, and Dodge pickups. When this is done, Toyota comes in dead last in towing capacity and have the shortest wheelbase.

By the way, the Silverado 1500HD has 300 HP and 360 LbFt of torque. This is their top of the line 1/2 ton pickup, the one you should be using for comparison.

I don't care what the numbers say...I'll put my 5.3 up against ANY Tundra, even with modifications.

The Big 3 have one thing the Jap(anese) trucks don't.......BALLS!

I can't speak for the Ford 4.6 or Toyota, but like Jimmy, I agree that the 5.3 Vortec is one heck of a good engine and economical too! Bagman.

jwilly,

Like I said in previous posts, it is very clear that you have biased opinions regarding the Tundra and you will slant and bend and use whatever figures you rationalize that will make your point the best.

I am a past, recent owner of the Tundra V8 Limited and can tell you that I was never, ever, beat by any Ford pickup truck other than one Lightning. And as far as pulling, it pulled just fine and I passed other "big 3" rigs during the time I had the Tundra.

I would still have the Tundra today except we will be going to a much bigger unit in the next few months.

You can say whatever you want about how the Tundra doesn't compare with the "Big 3", but for those of us who have owned the Tundra, we know what the truth is. So who exactly are you trying to convince; us, who know better, or yourself????
