We enjoyed Pirate Land in September. Had a beach site and it was nice. The only thing that annoyed us was the non-stop parade of golf carts. It was almost like trying to walk on a siuper highway (That may be a bit of an exageration)we enjoyed the park, the people and the beach. I didn't think the wind was bad.

Bulldog,
We are thinking about returning to Pirate Land in May but that's not engraved in stone yet. Whats it like there in April? We heard that they have a Biker Week around Memorial Day that we'd rather avoid. We also heard there is a real bunch of crazies down there for Spring Break that we would't mind missing. But we can't wait to get back. Any thoughts?

We stayed at both, Pirateland in 00 and Ocean Lakes in 4/02 and 8/02 and Pirate land seems to cater to the older crowd and Ocean lakes has everything in the world for the kids to do. I think it's a no brainer to stay somewhere where you all would be happy. Good Luck on you decision

Hi Tom A.:
The Massachusetts April vacation week is usually in the third week. I noticed during our traveling down to Myrtle Beach, it is also New York's vacation week. It was crowded down there, but we didn't find any trouble with the "spring break" at all. We lucked out with the weather last year, it was low to mid 80's all week with a 15-minute thunderstorm passing through on the night before we were leaving to head home. I hear the weather down there in April can either be cool or warm. (???)
I heard motorcyle week is in May. I thought I heard around the second week in May; please don't quote me on this.....I hope someone else on this post can verify it for me. We were thinking of changing our reservations to May until we heard the motorcycle week is in May. I don't want to be anywhere around there during that week!!!
May you have a wonderful vacation in Myrtle Beach whatever week you decide to pick.

For your info - There are two bike weeks in Myrtle beach during May. The first is the Harley Davidson rally begins on Friday before Mothers day every year, last 10 days. The second is Memorial Day weekend, sponsored by Atlantic Beach and attracts mostly African Americans. Spring break in April is not bad because the families are there with their children. The ones you have to be careful of are in March when the college students are there unsupervised.
Hope this info is helpful.

Like I posted earlier we like Ocean Lakes. About the golf cart problem, we were there in July and the roads were like superhighways(not an exaggeration). You really have to watch out for them, because sometimes the people driving the carts are nuts. My mother went for a bike ride and had to avoid them twice in two hours to not get hit by one. I think you're going to have that problem at all the cgs that rent them, especially in the summer time. Other than that, despite the fact that it was crowded, people didn't bother each other with other excessive noises. ie. radios....
Just don't stay too close to the pool, and entertainment complex, extremely congested with traffic and people visiting these places. Don't stay at the far end of the 2000 block. We were in site 2029 and that's a turn around for golf carts. We were looking in their headlights all night, plus, there's a huge highrise condo complex next door with a night club, they do close down at 11 p.m. but until then it's an absolute zoo. We were in the second row from the beach, don't pick the very front row, it's way too busy. As far as wind, we didn't have any major problems, sure, it was sandy, but we just expected that. Some of the sites closer to the back are grassier, are quieter(not as much cart traffic and there is fireworks till 2-3am on the beach. Note: that would be at all camgrounds, fireworks can be seen for miles.) and some sites have some shade. We chose the beach front for the convience of beach access for the kids. We did have a good time though. The kids loved it.
Thank-you so much about the posts of bikerweek for May. I just recommended my brother and sister-in-law to go then before school gets out. Maybe September would be better. I'm going to warn them right away.

One more question. Ocean Lakes doesn't allow motorcycles to be driven in the park. Do they wave that rule during bikers week?

We have been to Myrtle Beach several times in the last few years and our favorite campground is Barefoot Landing. We have driven through the other ones but our favorite still remains Barefoot Landing.

We have camped in MB many, many times and our son now lives there. We have stayed at Lakewood and now, when visiting the kid, stay at MB KOA, near his home.
A word about the biker weekends. There are 2, one over Memorial Day weekend and another in July. The traffic on those weekends is impossible - so you want to avoid it then at all costs!
There are literally hundreds of restaurants all over the area. I would like to recommend a couple. Broadway at the Beach is a shopping/entertainment/restaurant complex in MB. Visit Joe's Crab Shack or the Crab House if you like seafood. Farther north, at Barefoot Landing, there is another Crab House Restaurant.
Truthfully, some of the best restaurants are in Murrills Inlet, about `15 miles south on Rt. 17. If you go hungry down there, its your fault! Have a good time, and be patient with the traffic.
