"Because about 25% of GM's larger engines are typically sold for marine use, much of the testing on the Vortec 8100 was done using the marine market's more severe-duty parameters. In one particular test, called the "Marine Dock," an engine is run at virtually wide-open throttle for 300 hours straight (60-minute cycle—55 minutes wide-open-throttle/5 minutes idle). According to GM, this testing is more severe than standard durability testing used for truck applications."

At www.pistonslap.com, there is an audio of the piston slap. In the clip, I hear two sounds... tapping and low frequency knocking. Which is the piston slap?
Someone go listen and tell us if you here the same. I'm woundering if I'm hearing the loud clicking of the valve train rather then slap in my engine.

I have a 2001 2500HD with the 8.1,it has 26K on it. My truck makes some funky noise right after startup,it sounds like a really quite diesel. I have to stand next to the front tire to hear it. I'd say it's the CSK. It starts about 5-10 seconds after the engine is started after sitting overnight, and lasts about 10 seconds. It doesn't happen the rest of the day.
My 1998 Chevy 1500 with the 5.7 sounded the same way after sitting overnight. I also had a 1998 Ford Ranger with the 4.0,and it was really bad. It also sounded like a diesel, but was much louder and never went away, even after warming up.

I heard the rumor that the Duramax was going to be available in the Suburban....if that is true you would have another option in a GM vehicle.

I was in the market for a new truck when the Duramax first hit the showrooms. I was not a diesel person but thought I would check it out. The truck I drove lacked performance and the Allison was always searching for a gear at a steady cruise. I later found out that all the new Duramax/Allison trucks were not like this one. I eventually bought a 2002 2500HD 4x4 with the 6 Liter. This engine was noisy from the day I brought it home. Valvetrain noise and piston slap. I had read enough on these forums about the dealers not addressing this problem, so I didn't even take it up with the shop. The truck has always had Delco filters and Mobile 1. Oil was changed at 4000-5000 miles when not towing a trailer. On an average morning you could here the valvetrain noise for about 15 seconds and the piston slap for 3 - 5 minutes of driving. It never totally went away, but got less noticeable. It finally got to me last week. I decided that if my truck was going to sound like a diesel, it might as well be a diesel. I traded it in on an '03 Duramax 4x4. With the rebates, it is hard to pass up a $45,000 truck that can be bought for $32,500. Other than the new Chevy front end I already like it better than the other truck. I only have about 600 miles so far, but I think it will outrun my old 6.0 and obviously out-pull it. Fuel mileage is drastically better.
While waiting at the dealer for them to finish getting my new truck ready, I spent some time talking to the service manager about the 6.o Liter. The only long term problem they have seen with the 6.0, is some oil consumption. Maybe a quart every 5000 miles. A little oil goes by the rings during cold start. His opinion is, the shorter skirts on the piston allow a little more rocking in the cylinder until temperatures stablize. He sees numerous trucks, that are worked hard, with more than 100,000 miles on them and still have no issues.
In all honesty, the main reason I traded was for better fuel mileage and a little added pulling power. I had no reliabilty fears with the 6 liter. My average MPG with the 6.0 was 13.6. My first tank with the Duramax averaged 17.1 (on-board computer said 17.3). I don't know what all has been changed between the Dmax I drove several years ago and the current model, but I am impressed. Give one a test drive.
With the $5500 rebate you basically get the Duramax/Allison for free.

I have the 8.1 and it always had what sounds to me like a slight lifter tick. Have to be standing by the front wheel to hear it. Never worried about. Its a great running engine and pulls like a beast. If someone is thinking about a new truck, NOW is the time to buy a new GM. The discounts on the 2003 are huge! I elected to get the 0% interest but I was able to buy a 41K MSRP truck for 33K. My dealer searched a week to find me a 3500 LS. 2500HD's are a little easier to find. The rebates have hurt trade ins so try not to take it personal. Even with 0% interest you will still get a 1K diesel rebate, 750.00 owner loyalty if you have another GM product and regional discounts. I hope my new truck will be here tommorow.

I have a 2002 Sierra 2500HD with the 6.0.
It developed piston slap at 3000 miles. It sounds like a rattletrap when it starts and for 10 minutes of driving. Brought it to dealer sveral times and all they do is shake their head and say it's normal.
Got the 100,00 warranty from GMC for whatever thats worth. If they won't fix it now they won't fix it later.
So if you buy a GMC make sure you can live with the noise. If the noise is going to bother you don't buy it. If you look on the net in the right places you will see that this a a wide spread problem & affects more that what is being shown on this sight.

Mattmo - I think it is still a rumor - I emailed and talked with GM. They have no plans as of a couple of months ago to put the diesel in the suburban. I guess they don't have the room to put the allison tranny under the chassis and the 4l80e isn't strong enough for the diesel.

In our 2002 8.1L it has a little noise at startup and burned a little extra oil over the first few thousand miles, but we haven't had any problem since. The problem seems to be more limited in scope and effect than what Ford had in the late '90s since so few have had failures. More 6.8L's have had failures in RVs than the Vortec engines in the GM vehicles, so even though I have always been a Ford guy, I bought the GM truck.
