Talked to a friend of mine who has lost 5 of six tires 19.5 XRV his brother has lost all six and his ex wife has lost 4 all were tread seperations. Two are on Winnebago 1997 class A's with slides and one on a non slide. All tires were inflated to spec per Winnebago not each motorhome being weighted and under 5 years old. Durning their attempted adjustments they were told all RV'ers abuse their tires and run them underinflated and that some places that sell Michelin tires do so under various marketing agreements and warranty adjustments can only be gotton through the seller and not directly with Michelin. It seems to me a convinient way to sidestep the warranty that Michelin is supposed to have on their product. I ame researching tires and want to know if this is a normal Michelin practice and are there a lot of sidewall failures and seperations with this particular brand and what are your warranty experiences?

Richard,
Sorry to hear about the 19.5 XRV tire failures.
My 1991 Winnebago on a P-30 chassis came with 19.5 XZA tires, and after running them for 40K miles, I replaced them with the 19.5 XRV's. I drove a bit over 40K on them over some very taxing roads (Alaska Highway three trips) before trading in that RV, and had no problems at all with them. In fact, I drove from the Chicago area, where I hit something in the road, to New Jersey, and down to Florida, before I discovered a three inch gash that was nearly 3/8" deep in the sidewall of an inside dual, and the tire did not blow, or lose any air, and no, Michelin did not cover that damage under warranty.
I currently have a set of 22.5 XRV's on my current RV, and only have 20K miles on them with no problems, however who is to say I shall not have problems tomorrow.

It seems to me that most of the horror stories about Michelin tires are about the XRV series. I've run Michelins on everything, for many years, and I've never had a failure, of any kind. BUT, I've never owned any XRV Michelins. Last time I replace the tires on my gasoline motorhome, they didn't make my size in the XRV(16"), so I just bought the regular truck Michelin. I wanted the XRV, and now I'm glad I couldn't find them. My new diesel pusher has Michelins(22.5"), but they're not XRV. I'm glad....I think.

Original tires on a 1997 would make them 7 years old. Some people (not manufacturers) say to replace every three years regardless of milage/ wear. I would have to agree with that thinking.

hello, we had xrv's on our used endeavor(00)we bought last winter. had a blowout in geogia on our way hoe from fla. in may and decided to replace all 6 tires. the xrv's were 255's and we went up a size to 275's which took us to a xza,16 ply and the ride and handling is 100% improved. these are 22.5 tires. it seems the oem's use the smallest tire they can to reduce cost(imho)and the public beware, because they are within there limits, but barely!!

I have not heard of 3 year replacement, but a 6 year life expectancy is the number most of the RV and RV safety industry throws around. This is from date of tire manufacturer, NOT when the vehicle went into service. For all tires built before 2000, the last three digits of the number beginning with DOT...molded into ONE side of each tire indicate the week and year of production. So DOT.....247 was built the 24th week of 1997 AND IS READY FOR REPLACEMENT REGARDLESS OF TREAD AND REGARDLESS OF WHETHER IT SAT AT THE CHASSIS MANUFACTURER FOR ONE YEAR AND ANOTHER YEAR AT THE COACH BUILDER AND ANOTHER YEAR AT A DEALER. So, even if the coach went into service in 2000, the tires are at the end of their "safe" life.

Also, in all fairness, if 80% of the motorhomes come from the factory with Michelin XRV's, and, IF they are NO BETTER/NO WORSE THAN AVERAGE, 80% OF THE COMPLAINTS AND NEGATIVE COMMENTS WILL BE ABOUT THE XRV-- just a thought.

You do not sign a NO-WARRANTY disclosure when buy tires which means that they fall under the Magnusson-Moss Act. The factory must honor the warranty or prove that the user was at fault. I have not heard of a single case of anyone pushing the issue that far. Some day some attorney will get a class action going against them so he can make 98% of the monwy and the rest can be spit among the compaintants. Michelin has no defense in this if someone pushes the issue. Many states have what is know as a Legal Pattern complaint. That is where three or more cases of the same problem under the same circumstances can be proven with the factory. They loose!

I've had the XRV's since last August. I've had the coach weighed and adhere to the Michelin tire pressure tables. I check the tire pressure on a regular basis and monitor the side wall temperature by touching with my hand and an infra red thermometer. I now have about 7,000 miles of use on the tires and all has been AOK. The tires give a nice feel to the MH ride and improved the overall handling.

So, I guess you can say that so far I've been a happy camper with the Michelins and I'm sure there are many other folks on this forum that have equally good stories to report.

I have had at least 4 Michelin tires blow, the last took part of the fiberglass side. Any tire mfg. before 2000 should be replaced.

Had Michelin on my last 3 MH'sno problem 19.5 on present no problem. Most of the complaints seamed to be with the 22.5 tires.
