Have a 99 Suburban, 3.73 rear end, 5.7L gas engine. Done a little internet searching, but can't find out if there is an RPO code or how I determine if I have the 8.5" or 9.5" - Is there a code which will tell me this?

Take your serial number and go to your local dealer and they can get the equipment list for your vehicle. That tells you everything that was installed on it AT MANUFACTURE time......

There aren't that many different diff pumpkin shapes for each manufacturer. Once you know what to look for, you can ID them just by looking at the pumpkin...generally speaking...as there's always exceptions to the rule...

Here's two hot links to sites that has diff pumpkin profiles. Best is the K5 site. We usually refer to the diff by the number of bolts holding on the cover (there's some overlap...as some has two different with same number of bolts).

Colorado K5 diff profile ID ...going private and membership only, so save the info to your disk.

PowerTrax pumpkin gasket outline ...shows the bolt numbers and gasket profile.

If you have a C/K1500, then it's a Corporate 10 bolt semi float 8.5" ring gear. If you have the C/K 2500, you have the 8 lug version of the Corporate 14 Bolt Semi-Float, 9.5" ring gear. By the way, I Have seen the Corporate 14 Bolt semi float 6 Lug version in certain Z-71 1/2 ton pickup's and the early 90's SS454 short bed pickup had a 5 lug version of this 14 bolt semi float axle. I just wished they would have put them in our 4X4 versions of the Suburban, seeing how we have the same GVWR (7200#) of a light duty 3/4 ton (C/K2500 - 6 lug version) pickup. It would save a lot of overheating pumpkins.
