Well - no money to get a new super duty with that 6.0, but i have a 99' F150 that's woth around $15/13K (retail/private) that i could trade in for an older PSD....
anywa, I've read that milage isn't an issue on diesels... that they'll give you 5ooK or more..
Questions:
1) what do you think of this truck? man i'm drooling!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6219&item=2400819988&rd=1
2) Mileage is 165K - is that really not a big deal? Should i maybe try to look for something with a few less? I've never owned a diesel, but try to do most basic mainanence myself... Per the desisel stop, i think i could handle the general stuff...
3) How good do the mid-90's PSD's do on milage? Comparable to the mid/late teens as i've seen referenced for the newer 7.3's?
4) if milage isn't a really big deal, how come so many people trade them in so early?
i really think i want to find a truck like this - please either tell i'm dreaming (in which case the wife will be happy - she likes the gasser, but she's not the own driving it when we're pulling the trailer).... or tell me i've got the right idea and i should just do it (in which case you've reaffirmed my inklings)!
thx

Don't buy the one with 165K on it. You can find better. Just turned 100K on my 1996 P'Stroke and am ready for the next 100K/ I like mine BETTER than new ones. It's quieter for one thing and has other little touches I like. I have had to fix a few things and I had new hoses added at 100K and had to replace an alternator about 95k. I get 13-14mpg towing 7000lb Airstream at 65mph. There is NO substitute for 440 c.i. with a turbo on it-NOTHING like it when I start from a dead stop. If I had the 460 c.i.gas I'd have my tow buried in the firewall just to get rolling and then get 5 mpg. Many on the used lot because some people buy them and simply don't like them. Good for YOU!

I agree. I am sure you can find something better with less miles out there.
the diesel should last forever. I mean forever.
If taken care of they last a long time. I have 250,000 on my cummins and never had any trouble with my diesel. I love it. I will never own another gas truck again.
Servicing the truck is nothing. It is easy. I don't know alot about the powerstroke but I am sure you will have no problems at all.
The diesel stop like you talked about is a great forum and has tons of information there for you. They should be able to answer any of your question or worries. But the PSD is a great diesel even though I am a BIG Cummins fan.
When you go and buy your new diesel. You might want to take it to a good diesel shop and have it looked over and have an oil analysis done on the diesel. Well good luck. -Anthony

brad - i had to find a used ford powerstroke that i could use for a daily driver and for towing a 5er. one year ago i found 96powerstroke 4x4 crewcab with 98k miles for 15,000. previous owner went for a new one with o intrest. try going to some rv dealers and asking if they know of any for sale. rv owners generaly take good care of their equip. also put an add in the newspaper-would like to buy-buying directly from the owner is always better you get a better feel for the truck, maintance history etc.

I would definitely pass on this truck with 165K on ebay.
Put the word out to all of your friends/neighbors/family/co-workers that you are looking for good used Ford PSD truck, check out other dealerships in your area, too. I had a used car salesman looking for me for about one year. Salesman found one, but the price was too high for our budget.
We searched for about one year and we found an excellent catch. My husband was working with a guy who wanted to sell his 99 F-350 4x4 PSD. A few guys at work showed some interest in buying it but nobody made an definite offer.
I went and looked at the truck, talked with owner and made an offer on the spot. Gave him a check for $500 to hold it for us for about 3 weeks until we could get our down payment for it.
I had a mechanic check out the truck, I was told it's in excellent condition. It had 63,000 miles on it when we purchased it (paid $18,500). Even the loan officer at the bank told us we got a good deal on it.
The guy never advertised this truck in the newspaper, it was only done by "word of mouth".
This is our first diesel. I did a lot of research on the internet, and I would talk to diesel owners in parking lots to ask them about their trucks. Of course, men love to talk about their trucks!
All of them told me they were good trucks, take good care of it and it will last easily into 300K or longer.
When we get it close to being paid off, we will replace my huband's truck with another diesel. It's just too expensive to replace a gas truck every 150K or so. In the long run I think the diesel is a much better deal for performance and years of use.
By the way, this truck is "mama's truck". I had my car for 11 years and waited for my husband's truck to get paid off, then we got this one a few months later. I told hubby next vehicle was mine. He laughed. But I still drive it everyday and love it.
