Agreeing with some others. Both places are tourist traps, but you can walk around Gatlinburg. Unless you're looking for full hookups, stay in the park as suggested and get REAL scenery.............

DONT miss taking a trip on Roaring Fork Road!! Follow the signs from downtown. Have a good low gear - it is 7 miles of one lane, one way road,10 mph, sometimes very steep through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Smokys. Opens at 7am closes before dark. We have seen bear, wild turkey, deer, and lots of vistas!

We always stay in Gatlinburg at Twin Creek (50+ times). We do not care for the "touristy junk" that Pigeon Forge offers. I am not saying we never go to Pigeon Forge, because we do (3 kids) its just that Gatlinburg is better for us. Closer to the National Park for hiking, and playing. We only go to Gatlinburg, to town, as we refer to it, in the evening and that is to stroll, people watch and eat ice cream. We go to Dollywood about every other year, maybe a water park about every three years and so forth.
