My nice is stuck in Flagstaff on a Sunday becuse the water pump failed on her car that was previously installed by Pep Boys in Albuquerque. She is trying to have Pep Boys in Flagstaff install a new water pump pursuant to their warranty clause.
Now Pep Boys in Flagstaff is telling her that because the pump was installed by a different store, the warranty will not be honored and my nice will have to pay another 500 dollars to get it fixed.
Has anyone ever run into this kind of a problem on their toad with Pep Boys? If so, how did you resolve it.

What is the warranty clause you refer to?

We have learned that warranties, even on parts alone, sold at nationwide stores like NAPA, are not necessarily nationwide. It varies from part to part.

That seems like kind of a pricey water pump, incidentally. Our Malibu water pump costs $700 including labor at a dealer, but it's an exception - a horrible design that requires removal of a huge number of components unrelated to the pump.

I have to say this and I should not.

A water pump for my Chevy truck costs $49 and I can install it in less than two hours.

Many of these so called "quality" foreign cars cost like hades when you start buying parts. A good deal of the American cars, Chevy included, have gone to the "make them small" design, put the motors in sideways and drove the price of automotive work sky high. Some cars have to have the engine removed to replace a water pump.

I have just spent over $3400 replacing a motor made by Mitzibushi in a Chrysler. There is no need for such costs. Front wheel drive is more expensive to maintain and to repair. It breaks down more often. A new transmission is now into the thouusands of dollars.

This was not the casse when we were buying American. OUr vehicles lasted. My 1997 Chevy truck just turned over a quarter million miles and has not even been tuned up or been in the shop. An attorney I work with bought a Toyota Highlander and it has less than 30,000 miles on it and he has spent over $2000 in repairs alone.

It is better to be hated for what you are than loved for what you are not.

Pep Boys in Texas honored the guarantee of a water pump I bought, and installed myself, in California.

At least she could find a Pep Boys that told her no. Ours closed w/o hardly any warning and people couldn't get the special order parts they had ordered and paid for,no warranty work, even getting work done that they were waiting for parts for.......
IMHO, if a Pep Boys did the warrantied work in the first place, then a different location should have to correct what was wrong, especially if it was a defective part or incorrect workmanship.....Goodyear,Firestone,Sears,Les Schwab and others like that don't tell you to take it back to the store you got it from and neither does Schucks or NAPA,they will replace a defective part from any of the other stores in their chains.....

Have you ever hadd any work done by Pep Boys? If so, did you read the back of the work order?
It turns out that Pep Boys did not have that particular water pump in stock (first repair in Flagstaff) and called the Auto parts store down the street for delivery. It was close to the end of the day and their driver was out on the road. My niece agreed to pick up the part, and naturally, she paid and signed for it. Now Pep Boys is taking the position that "You did not buy it here so we will not honeor our warranty". My brother, who has a law degree just loves these kind of disputes and has escallated the problem to Pep Boys corporate headquarters and the Attorney General in Arizona. It will be interesting how this comes out.
For all you RV'rs out there who might get talked into buying parts from places other than the place that is actually doing the repair on your RV or toad, this is a heads up.Be careful!!!

Marshal, did you niece pay pep boys for the water pump or did she pay the parts house down the street when she picked it up. If she did not pay pep boys directly, I doubt if your brother will have a leg to stand on with law suit. Pep Boys may be responsible for the labor portion of the warranty but not the actual part.

It's a shame that because of special circumstances the warranty has to be blown way out of proportion. What did your niece end up doing? Did Pep Boys finally agree to warranty the work?

Frrankjake:
Thank you for your interest in this matter. It is in the process of being sorted out by my brother and Pep Boys. I am fully aware of the difficulty of recovering any $ or enforcing warranty if part is bought elsewhere. However, Pep boys has admitted making the arangements to do this with the parts house down the street. I think that this will make a difference. I will let you know how it turns out in the end.
