Starting problems:

I own a 1978 Georgie Boy Cruise Air with a Dodge 440 in it. I've been having starting troubles for awhile now and now have absolutely NO power whatsoever.

To make a long story long...

This season everything had been working and starting fine. Recently I could turn the key to the on position and everything worked, but as soon as I would turn the key to 'start' everything goes out and stays out; no lights, wipers, gauges , nothing. I know it's a dead short because I don't get any voltage at the batteries. I was able to reset and get everything to work again by disconnecting then reconnecting the battery. I've replaced the starter relay, starter and solenoid, ballast resistor, dual battery solenoid. I've been trying to find the short with no luck. I've been able to trace it back to two wires that are connected together that connect to the starter relay and every time I hook up these wires my voltage drops to zero. I'm having trouble tracing these wires because they are wrapped in electrical tape with 20 other wires that run through the chassis.

I've been trouble shooting it for days and now I can't get it to reset and have absolutely NO power whatsoever.

Any ideas???

HELP!!

Hi there
With everything replaced, have you checked to see if the engine is seized? Does the solenoid click in and engage the starter? I doubt if the two small wires at the solenoid would/could handle the amout of current you seem to be pulling without melting or heating up considerably. I'm assuming the battery is up to snuff also

A jumper wire on the starter solenoid (from large battery terminal to small terminal) will pull in the starter and allow it to crank. If that works, you have to work back to see why the starter relay is not being energized. Could be in the ignition switch itself, wiggle it back and forth in the "run" position to see if your gauges come alive. If that is a Chrysler steering column there are also connectors at the bottom that allow the steering column wiring to be disconnected and removed. If it is like Chrysler trucks the wiring goes through the firewall through a connector block which tend to corrode. A MOPAR truck manual will help (if that is indeed Chrysler)with tracing the wiring. A web search will produce an ignition circuit for those four or five pin ignition control modules. (www.225.ca/tech/images/js005.jpg)
