Does anybody know of any reason why a fuel filter cannot be used as a water filter?

I asked this question before when somebody made a comment about it within some other thread where water "contamination" of a fuel filter was mentioned, but this forum's sofware isn't very helpful even when it comes to finding responses to one's own posts.

I would like to use fuel filters to prevent any blockages in the windshield and water injection systems but I noticed that one of them went "foggy" on one side.

I think you meant you want to use a fuel filter as a water filter, that's what your post subject says anyway.

Fuel and water don't mix so when water gets into a fuel filter that does not have a separate "sump" (water separator)to hold the water the filter will probably quickly clog because it gets gummy or jelly like.

The only reason I can think of that could cause a problem is that the fuel filter is manufactured with the intent of having mineral products (gas/diesel) in the filter at all times and is not designed to have water in it. the materials and gaskets it is made from may react (swell, shrink, discolor, etc.) when it is used with water versus fuel.

The discoloration you are seeing is probably caused by just this sort of reaction. It may not harm the life of the filter.

Trial and error seem to me to be the answer and you are already into this, so let us know what you find.

I would think the kind of filter which has a screen in it- rather than a paper type element would work fine. I'm using one of these- a clear pyrex type body with a screen in it- to filter the return line of my power sterring system.
IIRC, I found it in the "speed" section of a chain auto parts store.

Why would you want to use a fuel filter as a water filter - the water from
a fuel filter would have contaminates and chemicals from the non-food or
non-potable water grade components .

Water filters are about the same price as fuel filters .

.

If you think knowledge is expensive , think about the price of ignorance .......

Where do you find $1.50 water filters with windshield water pump size hose attachments and as easily available as fuel filters?

Just a thought, but the fuel filter, even brand new and clean, will not provide the same level of filtering as a water filter. I would think that the water might taste "odd" also after going through that fuel filter.

Come on Tony, don't be so cheap. Spend the $10 on a water filter. How much did you spend on your RV? And fuel!!!

If you read what he's talking about, he's not wanting to filter his water supply, he wants to use the filter in the water injection system and for the windshield washer system.

Personally, I've never encountered any contaminants that would clog either of those systems. I don't see the need for a filter.

Hi,

Most fuel filters are designed to block water(larger molecules) and allow fuel passage to protect the carb/fuel injection.

Aloha,
If all you want to do is filter the small stuff for the windshield
washer and water injector, just get your wife's panty hose or similar and cut off a small piece and wrap it around the water inlet of the hose and leave it baggy so you have more surface area exposed. Usually there's a small screen filter plugged in on the end and if it doesn't, you can get one at the auto parts store. If you go the panty hose route,
don't put it back in her drawer with the hole in it.

Mahalo,
Howard
