I've got pretty poor water pressure in my class A shower. Was thinking of installing a Shurflo 5.7gpm pump to replace my 2.8 gpm pump. The pump is rated at 5.5 gpm with pressure up to 65 psi. Would I be risking popping any of the plumbing fittings by putting in a pump that effectively doubles my water pressure? I have a '96 Aerbus.

You should not have a problem unless there is some already defective plumbing. Many places you hook to shore power have at least that much pressure unless you use a pressure relief unit. Just remember that yoou are going to go through water much faster when dry camping.

I put a Shurfo 5.7 in my 2001 Adventurer. No water problems & very good pressure in shower! In fact, I was traveling this spring with the old smaller water pump on, a connection broke & pumped my fresh water tank dry! It was in my water tank compartment so no damage was done. Travel with water pump on?? I can't say the 5.7 is much quieter than the old one.

Bruce,

I just installed the Extreme 5.7 on my 2003 Journey DL. I"m doing this as a test, in comparison to the 2.8. I will be following up with a report when we get back from Harrisburg.

The system you have in your coach, as well as what is in ours, has been tested and must be RVIA certified to hold at 80 lbs. The new Extreme 5.7 is an upgrade and should not cause any problems.

When driving down the road, we always have the pump shut off! It's only a matter of tapping the switch at the one place comtrol panel, to turn it on.

Look for my report when we return

I just added another 2.8 in parallel. no increase in pressure, just more water volume. No problem for two years.

Bruce,
Only a guess but I would suspect there is an obstruction in the shower faucets, check valve or shower head. I have always been satisfied with my low flow pumps but I want to conserve water.

I too replaced my original waterpump with the Shurflo 5.7. After reading the owners manual I was convinced that I bought the wrong brand. This pump is a marketing reaction to the new and patented flojet VSD variable speed water pump. The VSD is actually a variable speed motor. The Shurflo "smart sensor" (marketing people again) 5.7 water pump is billed as a variable speed pump, but it actually just has three speeds - off, on normally, and on hard. What it does is when you turn the water on and start using it, it turns the pump on at "normal speed". Then it switches to the high speed if the pressure goes below a certain point due to lots of flow (think multiple faucets open).

This unit does NOT reduce pulsation at all compared to the smaller sureflo, contrary to the marketing hype for the unit.

This unit certainly is not noticably quieter than it's smaller sibling (to my ears).

If you want quiet, it has more to do with how your pump is mounted than what type it is. On my coach, while I was installing the 5.7, I noticed that the brains at Rexhall had installed it on a plastic "wall" with a large cavity behind it. That's a bit like installing it on the head of a drum and expecting it to be quiet. I got some longer hoses and changed the mounting such that it's mounted to the thick plywood floor (i.e. the cieling of the basement compartment). This made a huge improvement in the noise from the pump.

My next step is to add an accumulator tank to get rid of the pulsation. Then I think I will be happy with my water pump setup in this coach.

Bruce, I had a 95 Rexair and my pump was under the bed. Isthat where yours is? Next: The 5.7 is a lot quieter!!! BUY you have to do exactly what they say. 1. atleast 18 inches of flexable line to deaden "Water shock". 2. The pump comes with two 90 degree elbows, but the instructions say use straight fittings. (Have to contact Shruflo to get them). 4. The pump takes a different strainer with a much higher capacity.. (See installaton instructions). I did all that and also mounted the whole deal on plywood. If you pump is under the bed, mounting it on plywood will really help with installation and noise. If you half A** the deal, as I'm sure some people do, then you won't be happy, but installed correctly it works great and is very quiet.

Thanks, Jim and all else who have responded. Jim, did you have to make any modifications to the shower head? You mentioned noise reduction; did it also greatly increase your shower water flow? I believe mine is also under the bed....it was on my '98 Rex Air; I just bought the MH and it's still 100 miles away.

Have you taken the shower head apart and looked for a restrictor plate? Some of the RV units have one so you don't fill up your holding tank too fast.
