Reading your reply and am thinking of getting a tow package on my 1998 Chrysler Town & Country LXI. I am going to tow a 24 ft pontoon with a 50 HP motor. I think it weighs about 1500 lbs. My question is this. Do you think that is a mistake and what was the weight of your camper?
Thanks

Jimmy hit the nail on the head. I've "been there, done that", too. I had a Nissan Quest, 3500# "tow rating", and pulled a 21' Starcraft TravelStar hybrid TT with it for a year. You won't be happy. Your Pontiac Montana won't be happy. Scale down your TT to maybe a pop-up or upgrade your TV.

Friends tow a larger pop-up (around 3000lbs gross) with a Toyota Sienna. They do OK with 2 parents, 3 kids in the vehicle but definitely wouldn't want to tow much more. Also, the pop-up doesn't present the frontal area wind drag of a travel trailer.

I reiterate what others have said my relaying my own experience. I used to own the same size Prowler Ultralite and towed it with a Ford Aerostar. It had the largest available engine, tow package and super engine cooling. With family, dog, pop, beer, bikes, etc., I was within 300 lbs. of my GCWR. It's maximum tow rating was 4,400 lbs. My trailer was well below that, and I would rate the van's performance while towing as barely adequate. I couldn't imagine towing it with a lighter duty vehicle yet than the Aerostar.
