We are planning a trip to M.B. and have talked with another that stayed there last year and told us that the traffic is just horrible. Can any of you fellow members that have stayed there give your perspective on this and if any of the campgrounds may be located a little out of the way that may alleviate this congestion. Thanks !!

We have been to Myrtle Beach several times in the past 3 years and have found the any traffic problems are tolerable even this year during "bike week". We normally stay at Myrtle Beach Travel Park in North Myrtle Beach and have no problem accessing any of the major roads. Matter of fact there are numerous choices almost outside your door. The only place we have found traffic real bad is right down town Myrtle Beach when there is some sort of convention, ect going on. By the way we have stayed at a few other camp grounds there and visited every one of the rest and by far Myrtle Beach Travel Park is one of the finest!

We stayed at Lakewood Campground (great place) last year. The traffic was ok, and had a great time. Can't wait to go back.

Just got back from there. Most of the CG's are self contained and you might not need to leave much. Downtown has terrible traffic at evening crusing time, tried it only once. The outlet factories up 501 are not too bad to get to but traffic does crawl if there is an accident. We visited the outlet factorys and camping world, Wal-mart almost daily and the traffic while thick was not such that it would discourage me from returning. Study the map and there are a few roads that will route you around both 17 hwy routes. I forget the name of the road but it runs the same way as 17 but is a side street that most toursits don't find. Take it to bypass 17 traffic. Weekends and rush hour traffic is pretty bad, but you can work around those times. We stayed at Ocean Lakes and will return there again in a few years.

When we were in Myrtle Beach, it reminded me of Branson, MO with an ocean.

Stayed at Lakewood this past Memorial Day. With the new bypass traffic was no problem. If you know anything about MB, then you know that Memorial day is a major biker weekend. Still, using the new bypass hwy 32, it was a piece of cake. Best thing they have ever done.

Went there a few years ago and stayed in North Myrtle Beach. Rained for most of our stay. That put most of the tourists (ourselves included) off the beaches and golf courses and on the limited roadways. Very, very crowded. Like big city rush hour gridlock. Take your patience pills. You'll get there eventually.

Just remember that if every one wants to go to supper at the same time or check out of the hotel or campground, things will be crowded. Look for things you can do when most people aren't doing them. Leave early on your day of departure or do as we do, we book the site for one day longer than we intend to stay, That way we can spend the day there and then leave at our leisure after everyone else is headed out and the roads cleared. Course we only live about 3 hours from the beach and don't have a long ride to get home.
The big thing is to just relax and flow with the traffic. We southerners are noted for not getting in a hurry and sitting in traffic is a good time to practice. Besides, as the wife tells me " Getting frustrated won't make the traffic go away."
Happy camping and see you on the beach!

Minnow,
I lived in Charleston for 20 years and probably went there at least twice a year. My folks have a time share in North MB.
Don't worry you will have a great time. Ther are more places to eat, visit, shop, and play than anywhere.
The traffic is bad. But like the other post said you got to travel during the off hours. You must be walking into the restaraunts by 5:30pm, things won't thin out until after 10pm.
There is beautiful state park about 30 minutes south of MB. It is Huntington Beach. Pristine for the MB area. Also in the thick of it all is

I have been reading about this one. Sounds neat.
Good Luck.

Minnow, All the campgrounds at the beach are nice. Most are mammoth compared to most other parts of the country. My wife take 3-4 trips there a year because we live so close. To avoid the big, big traffic, go after labor day to miss the crowds.
We usually stay at Huntington Beach State Park, Barefoot RV Resort or the KOA is nice with the renovated sites. Book early, they fill up fast. Oceans Lakes is the most popular and largest. It's like a city. 3 time winner of campground of the year award, but too crowded for me.
To get around Myrtle Beach, if the traffic is terrible find Robert Grissom Pky, it parralels hwy. 17 and 17 bypass...mostly used by and built for the locals. Saves a lot of time.
Good luck
