What's up with this??? I have been shopping for fishing poles and there is a California warning in the small print about a chemical present that causes cancer and birth defects....
Can anyone shed some light on this????
We were really wanting to add fishing to our list of things to do while camping, but I don't want to subject my family to known hazards...????

Oh, come on!
You're getting cancer by reading this post, sitting in front of your Monitor.
You're getting cancer driving a car and smelling the "new car smell".
You're getting cancer at the gas station from the fumes.
You're getting cancer eating bacon and eggs for breakfast.
You're getting cancer living under power lines.
You're getting cancer being exposed to sunlight.
You're getting cancer from radon coming from you're house.
Sure, you'll get cancer from fishing reels... If you EAT 3 OF THEM EVERYDAY FOR 15 YEARS!!!!
Living..... Nobody gets out of it alive.
Seriously, it's probably the minute speck of grease they put INSIDE the reel that has the nasties some lab rat thinks causes cancer.
IMHO.

SAR Tracker...
what a great list, but you forgot the cancer causing contaminants that you'll get from eating the fish you catch because of the Chlordane, DDE, deildin and PCBs that remain in the food chain for up to 30 years in some lakes and waterways.
Why does the American Cancer Society, McDonald's Ronald McDonald House and other cancer involved organizations use fishing derbies as an incentive to raise money to fight cancer....go figure.
The irony escapes me.
As for fishing poles, I believe it may be the graphite based composite used in the manufacturing of the pole that warrants the warning under current California law. And as you said, it would take years of ingestion and high concentrations for these contaminants to really matter to an individual.

Just think. Several "good" rats were injected huge doses of graphite composites over 3 months just to prove that 50 years of never taking your hands off of the fishing pole would give you cancer. Therefore a warning label is needed to absolve the manufacturer of any responsibility. And remember to never stand on the top of a step ladder.

Man I am sooooo glad I don't live in the Country of "Califorina"....
You cannot tow over 55.
Your rig has to be inspected upon entry.
You cannot do this...do that...
Very pretty landscape but the rules.....
The best is no electric power plants...but they sure want the power!!!
Sorry fellow Californians just could not resist.

For the record, I bought the poles before I posted. I just wondered if there really was anything to the warning. I'll just be careful not to eat the fishing pole or reel.... My kids are past the "teething" stage so they won't chew on them either!!!!

It is possible they are referring to the grease used to lubricate the reel. when cleaning the reel, don't lick the grease out of it. If you get the gooey stuff on your fingers, wash your hands sometime during the next 5 years or so, and you shouldn't have any problems.
They say the same thing about used oil, gasoline, avgas, jet fuel, diesel fuel, and bearing grease. I was a mechanic for over 40 years, and none of that stuff has killed me yet...........AAAAUUUUGHGHGH!!

Well I just bought a new Shimano rod and reel yesterday with the "California" warning on each of them. Fortunately I don't live in California so I don't have to worry about!
Here in Quebec I grew up with asbestos, so graphite in a fishing rod seems kind of ho-hum.
