Anybody have any input on this problem:
Just bought a new 2001 GMC Crew Cab Dually with all the tow packages & HD
stuff. Own a 32' Carri-Lite 5th wheel.
Had Reese 18k Hitch re-installed from 93 Dodge Dually.
Trailer clearance is only about 2" from top of bed-rails to bottom of 5th
overhang. Tooooo close.
Lower the rear of the truck ? Extend the shackles and remove the helper
springs to drop the height of the truck ?
Or: "flip the axles" on the camper ? Will eventually buy new camper in a
year or so and still have the truck, would 'prolly have to do it to the new
camper too.
What about GMC warranty ?
Thoughts, comments, suggestion, ideas appreciated.

Hi this is chev man and yes we have a problem as my 1-ton 2wd is 57" high at the back. I have the easy rider air hitch and they want 7" clear and I had 4 with a reece hitch. Gm and I have talked about this and the local gm dealer has been told me something will be done by april or may. GM said don't touch it or warrenty will be void but when you talk to customer service they have nice ladies on their end that may never have seen a truck by the way they talk to you. The 2wd is same as 4wd so I didn't see my until it came and wasn't too happy as ford did this in 99 and chev is made different so their fix won't work for me. I am getting an adjustable axle on new trailer this wednesday. If and when Gm helps me I will get back to you. Customer service told me maybe gm didn't make this truck just for me so maybe they didn't make it for you either. what an answer//

Larry,
I am in the same situation as you. I have read your other posts and the Belltech shackle replacement. A couple of questions for you. You mentioned GM, did your local dealer do the modification? Was this under warranty or did you pay? As a side note: I wonder if GM is going to do something about this- a new truck that you can't use towing a fifthwheel without doing modifications to the truck and/or trailer.
You mentioned in another post the height at 57" at the back, which is what I have, what is it now?
Any problems with the overload springs?
Another post you mentioned that Belltech was working on lowering the truck, you came back with a part number 6400 which has been out for years, and is just a schakle replacement. So I wonder if they are still working on something else as a truck shop told me they were coming out with a "kit" July 1; hanger and shackle-2" each for a total of 4".

Budman Hi everyone Gm is who installed the shackles and I paid $169.00 for it and it was just the rear shackle on each side for atotal of 2 pieces and it was part no. 6400 the truck was 57" and is 55" now. My fifth lowers it 2" and the truck is still higher in back when loaded as I was afraid the fix belltech was working on would be more than than I wanted but I am very happy with the results. chev man great forum

Thanks for the reply. I called Belltech and was told that the other 2" drop from the hangers was going to be a while, still in R&D. They told me they are working on a new front hanger. After looking at how those hangers are installed by GM (rivit's) I would be a little leary of replacing them. I will be replacing the stock shackles on Wednesday with the Belltech 6400 shackles. I hope the 2" drop will give me the needed clearance also.
